Coaching & Mentoring at the Office

Thesaurus. com uses these words interchangeably while Dictionary.com attempts to make the following distinctions:
- Mentor: a wise and trusted counsellor or teacher. An influential senior sponsor or supporter
- Coach: a private tutor preparing (one) for (an exam)
However, neither of these definitions seem to accommodate the roles being widely used in business and government today.
Considering these roles, the role of a Coach or Life coach is one whose role is supporting and providing guidance, preparing their client for current and future “life episodes”. Importantly, it is not necessary for the Coach to have had the specific experience that their client is preparing for. Rather the Coach uses skills and processes to assist the client to progress toward agreed aims.
And it is on this point that the difference between coaching and mentoring emerges. A mentor will typically have similar experiences to that being contemplated by the client. They use their previous and wide experience (“wisdom”?) to provide different insights and interpretations for their client.
Both role of coach and mentor rely on skilful, empathetic, attentive, highly focussed listening and communication skills. It is only on this point of previous experience that the roles differ.
The results of a recent study, conducted by LexisNexis, and reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on 22nd October demonstrated clearly where a “coaching “ intervention would address the problem. The report stated that “only one fifth of Australian employees have received training on how to handle the mass of information at work, despite 60 percent saying they require it”. Coaching on global best practice on Information handling would clearly be an appropriate solution.
Conversely, an executive struggling to handle the politics of their organisation would find more value from a mentoring relationship with a senior executive who had real life experience with such issues.
